What Is a Track Roller?

Walk up to a tracked excavator and look at the underside of the undercarriage frame — the row of steel wheels sitting on top of the track chain are the bottom rollers, also called track rollers or lower rollers. On a machine like the SH220 LC, there are usually 7 to 9 per side. Their job is straightforward: carry the machine's weight and keep the track running in a straight line between the drive sprocket at the back and the idler at the front.

Each roller spins on a fixed shaft. The gap between the spinning body and the fixed shaft is sealed by a floating metal seal — two lapped steel rings pressed face-to-face by rubber O-rings. That seal keeps the oil in and the dirt out. When it goes, oil leaks out, the bearing runs dry, and the roller seizes — usually within a few hundred hours of the first weep. By that point the track chain and frame rail are often taking damage too, which costs a lot more to sort out than just swapping the roller early.

The signs are easy to spot on a walk-around: oil staining around the seal face, a roller that wobbles or grinds at low travel speed, or one that doesn't spin freely when you lift the track off the ground. Any of those means it's time to replace.

Manufacturing Process

The blank starts as a 50Mn steel forging — not cast, not welded. After CNC turning, the tread goes through medium-frequency induction hardening to a depth of 4–10mm. The floating seal faces are lapped flat before assembly, and every finished unit passes a pressure test for oil retention before it leaves the line.
